Motorcycle Repair: 83 Magna V65 idling problem, magna v65, v65 magna

Question
Hi Mark,
I have received training in riding but none in maintainig a motorcycle.
After reading thru some FAQs I think I know the answer to the problem but here goes;
I stored my 83 V65 Magna for an entire season  without treating or removing the fuel. I suspect the carb is all gummed up. The bike starts on choke but after warmed up will not idle on its own. I suppose a trip to the shop for a carb cleaning is the only solution?

p.s. I did have a new exhaust pipe put on but for whatever reason the mechanic did not replace it with the original pipes and now I have backfiring when I pull in the clutch handle to downshift.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Kevin

Answer
Hi Kevin,

Fuel in float bowls has varnished.The carbs will need cleaned. Send me an email. I'll return carb cleaning info files for you to review. Maybe you can do it yourself and save the $200+

Backfiring is not uncommon wioth aftermarket pipes. Carb tuning may be needed to correct the air-fuel mixture. I'll send info files on this, too. In the interim, describe the appearance of the spark plugs.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
