Motorcycle Repair: replace starter on a softail, heritage softail classic, tooth ring gear

Question
i have been having trouble with the starter on my 1998 harley heritage softail classic when i try to start it sounds like the bendix is running but not kicking in two or three times it will do this then it will kick in and start any advise would be helpful and some tips on how to change the starter on this bike thanks andy

Answer
Drain primary oil and remove outer primary cover, Remove starter Jack shaft bolt. now on starter side of primary remove the two allen bolts that bolt the starter to the primary. Now the starter will come out. Also look at the clutch ring gear teeth and the starter jack shaft pinion gear teeth. If bad replace the ring and pinion gear. Dont go back to a 102 tooth gear go to the 84 tooth ring gear.
