Motorcycle Repair: 83 virago xv500, decent shape, minor tune

Question
Hi ya Chris, I recently bought an 83 virago xv500 in decent shape for 21 years old. I was told by the previous owner that it slips out of first gear. Other than that it bogs down on take off every so often. It has died a few times at a redlight after spitting and sputtering slightly. It always cranks right back. From what I've read so far that is probly rust in the fuel line. However I am no machanic, and this is my first bike. So, any advice is much appreciated. thanks, Phil

Answer
Hi Phil.
First thing is to get the repair manual and pull the carbs and clean them properly.  Then drain, dry and reseal the tank and replace the fuel line.

Next, check the valves, gap and timing and synchronize the carbs.

Rust in the fuel line would shut the bike down a lot and you would not always be able to start it right back up, so there could be a few minor tune-up related things wrong that are ganging up on you.

Good luck.
