Motorcycle Repair: twin cam carb. rejetting, screaming eagle pipes, dyna jet

Question
mark - I got a good deal on a 2005 softail. The orginal buyer had it upgraded with screaming eagle
pipes, a k&n free flow air cleaner, and a dyna jet
kit.  Guy backed out of the deal at the last minute - leaving dealership willing to make a deal.  Now the problem - after 1,400 miles the bike would not idle, and black smoke is coming out of exhaust, plus I'am getting about 30 mpg.  I know problem is carb is too rich, but when I took bike to a nearby dealership they stated that the original dealership should not have installed the dyna kit, but have just reset the carb with Harley parts.  Why would a dealership put on parts that are not going to work as well as Harley parts? The dealership where bike was purchased is 200 miles away, the nearby dealership wants $150.00 to correct.  Should I drive 200 miles to have substandered parts replaced, and ask for more trouble or pay the $150.   Thanks HR

Answer
Hi Harvey,

Q: Why would a dealership put on parts that are not going to work as well as Harley parts?

A: I've witnessed lots of mysterious things dealers have done. Lack of wisdom or experience would be my answer.

A: Call the dealer first and get a feel for their position on the matter. If they are receptive to your problems, consider the trip. Keep in mind that it's a "buyers beware" market. In Ohio, we have "Lemon Law" protection. Check your State's consumer laws.

I believe you could make the repairs yourself at home. However, my H-D experience is limited. You should return to AllExperts and contact SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY or other H-D tech there for more details.
