Motorcycle Repair: 1982 yamaha seca xj750, clutch plates, xj750

Question
I got this bike from a friend a few months ago, and have gotten it back to a smooth running condition. My problem is that it will not continue to run when it is shifted in to gear. I replaced the kickstand switch because the wires to it were connected together from previous, even then the problem existed. What To Do?

Answer
Hi Mack, she needs a clutch. If the bike sat for a long time the clutch plates may have fused and one might disassemble the unit and free it up and inspect it for wear. If it looks ok and the steel plates are straight and free of warpage and the springs free length is within service limits then put it back in. If the clutch comes off the bike and is toast then replace everything if you can..Friction disks, steel plates and the springs. BE SURE TO CHANGE YOU ENGINE OIL AFTER THE CLUTCH IS REPLACED AND THEN AGAIN IN 200 MILES. thank you for asking
