Motorcycle Repair: 1980 GL1100 Valve Adjustment, compression stroke, peep hole

Question
Mark,
My Clymer's manual is missing part of the valve adjustment procedure. I know the valves are adjusted at .004 intake and .005 exhaust. What's missing is the adjustment order. Also do I rotate the timing mark to the "T1" or the "F" mark.

Thanks
Ernie F.

Answer
Hi Ernie,

I've done that task many times, but I cannot recall which sets of valves can be checked/adjusted while set on T1 at TDC of a paticular cylinder.

Set desired cylinder on TDC (Top Dead Center) of the compression stroke. The T1 mark will indicate TDC. If you're not sure how to tell compression stroke, do the following: remove spark plug, obstruct the plug hole with a finger, rotate crankshaft and listen for air escaping past your finger.

After hearing the escaping air, start looking for the T1 mark thru the peep hole. Align the T1 mark with the index mark. That cylinder is ready for valve clearance check/adjustment. Verify by moving valves on that cylinder with fingers.

Respectfully,
