Motorcycle Repair: no pwr to points, honda cb 750, timing light

Question
I have a 1978 Honda CB 750. I installed a new set of points, both sets, but still cant get it to fire up. It was running but wouldnt idle. Now nothing.HELP!

Answer
Hi Michael, I have to say I admire your ambition, you are tackling a task dreaded by even us seasoned old techs. This job requires some special tools. A motorcycle specific timing light, an analog dwell meter and a large powerful fan to keep your aircooled engine cool while adjusting. Ideally you would want the motorcycle elevated so the breaker plate is at eye level, like on a lift. If you dont have the setup then I suggest taking it to a shop that does and have a tech set your points, dwell and timing for you. It is not a job for the do it yourselfer unfortunatly. You might get it running {although not running well} by setting both sets of points to .012 {twelve thousands of an inch} if not adjusted and set properly you will probably overheat and burn out your ignition coils. Good luck
