Motorcycle Repair: Adjustment of rear wheel and chain, axle nut, using a ruler measure

Question
Just starting out and would like to know the proper and easiest way to allign and adjust the wheel and chain on a 1974 FL.
Thanks

Answer
What you need is about 1/2 inch of play in the chain. If you dont have it then loosen the axle nut. Locate the chain adjusters in the swinging arm. They are in the back. Tighten them if you have to much slack. Using a ruler, measure from the center of the axle to the rear of the swinging arm. You should get hte same measurement on both sides. With the same measurements you know your wheel is running true. Tighten the axle nut to 60 foot/lbs and your set to go.
Good luck and happy riding
