Motorcycle Repair: Engine would not stop revving., yamaha fzr600r, gas filter

Question
Hi Chris,

I have a 1998 Yamaha FZR600R with 30K miles.

The valve clearence was inspected and all within spec at 15K miles.  The bike now has 30k miles but I do not have a chance to inspect the valve cleance yet.

The bike has been running fine until recently.  The engine would stall when I come to a stop.  Turn up the idle (not the idle mixture screws)does not help.

I replaced the gas filter which is long overdue.

Replaced the spark plugs.  I have been using NGK CR8E for the past 15K (one heat rang higher than what comes with the bike - too cold).

Inspected the air filter and it was acceptable.

Now the problem is the opposit:
With the choke off,  idle (not mixture screws) set to min or non, temperature at about 80 degree F.  The bike starts up and the engine climbs to 5K rpm for about 4 or 5 seconds and then comes back down slowly, then idle (set to min) for a moment and then stall.  I can keep it alive by keeping the throttle open slightly.

On the road:  When I roll off the throttle to up shift the rpm does not drop.  I do not blib the throttle to down shift either because the rpm does not drop when the throttlel is rolled off.  The rpm remains at what ever rpm the moment the throttle is rolled off.

When I come to a stop the engine will either climbs to about 4-5K rpm or remains at what ever rpm the moment the throttle is rolled off.  The only way I can get it to idle "normally" (some times) is by braking the bike until it is down to about 2k rpm before disengage the clutch.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Answer
Hi Vic.
Well you need your idlespeed set up right, to correct it all.  I do not believe that valve gap is the problem.  Usually, that gets redone at around 50,000 miles.

You may need to check timing and carb Synch, though.  Take a look at the plugs.  That will tell you if there are any mixture issues as well (lean/normal/rich).

Let me know about that and we can take it from there.

Good luck.
