Motorcycle Repair: 81 Honda CM400 problems, honda cm400, motorcycle mechanics

Question
Just got my first bike, and boy am I happy! But here's the problem, the bike is rather jerky, especially when accelerating. I can here an intermittent rubbing sound from the chain, like it's tightening and loosening. Is it possible that the sprokets are out of round? I'm used to working on cars (3+ years as a mechanic), but I'm new to bikes. The bike is a 81 Honda CM400 Custom.

Thanks a million,
Darren

Answer
Hi Darren.
In the repair manual, there is a basic guide to show sprocket wear.  Basically, the teeth of the sprockets should all look like a "U".  If the teeth are not right, then both sprockets and the chain all need to be replaced.

You should also check the disc, pads and shoes on the brakes, both front and rear as well.  make sure that they are not unevenly worn, sticking or the disc and drum are not warped.

The basic things with motorcycle mechanics are not too different from automotive mechanics.  For most applications, just apply what you already know and refer to the repair manual for what you don't know.  You should be fine for most every problem that you run into.

Good luck.
