Motorcycle Repair: Charging Problem, test readings, signal lights

Question
Hi,
My 1982 KE175 has charging problems. I tested the magneto leads going to the volt reg and it climbs to 37+ Volts AC.  I tested the battery which started at 5.8 (6 Volt System) and after turning on the ignition key, it dropped by a volt.  But after starting it and continuing to monitor the battery, the volts drop consistently while the engine is on.  The signal lights do not flash and after a test run of 10 min, all the lights no longer work.  Is it the volt reg?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Eric,

I don't have output specs for the 1982 KE175. your test readings of 37+ VAC sounds healthy, comparatively.

The battery has definitely lost its usefulness. Each cell should be 2.2 VDC fully charged, with a minimal of 6 VDC.

Send me an email. I'll return electrical test files that will assist you diagnose the problem. My email is:
