Motorcycle Repair: no spark, valve stem seals, honda motorcycle

Hi Bill,
My old 84 xr 200r recently had new pistons and rings done but still smoked a bit but on last ride the bike just died kicked it over and it started sounded rattley then died and now there Is no spark at all any Idea? worth me having fixed or retiring the old girl.

Right crankcase cover... The pulse generator could be the source of the no-spark issue, but if it tests out okay, then the CDI box may be at fault. Lot more money, if you can find one. Shows discontinued at Honda. Make sure that the kill switch is out of the circuit, when checking for spark. Sometimes, the simple things make a big difference.

If the camchain and/or tensioner parts were not replaced, that could account for some top end noises... maybe the tensioner broke.

If the head wasn't rebuilt, the smoke could have come from bad valve stem seals or worn valve guides.

Break out the wrenches and sockets and pull it apart. If it broke something expensive, part it all out on Ebay. After 24 years, it may have breathed its last breath.

See if it has compression before you dive in too much. Should be around 150psi or more. If way down, you could have broken parts inside, but it is hard to tell from the outside.
