Motorcycle Repair: possible clutch or transmission trouble, yamaha 650 maxim, clutch cable

Question
Hi again Chris,  I have another concern about my 82 Yamaha 650 maxim.  When riding and shifting everything seems fine with the transmission.  But while crusing along in any gear if you gun the engine she will rev up no prob but the bike does not move out.  Feels like transmission is sliping or is this a clutch prob, all though the clutch is out, and what can I do about it.

Thanks Dennis

Answer
Hi Dennis.
Your clutch does sound as if it's slipping.  If it has the original clutchplates and springs, then they may be due for replacement.

If they are not the original plates and springs, then it could just need to be adjusted.  There is an adjustment at the engine side of the clutch cable.  Refer to the repair manual for the adjustment specs.

Try the adjustment first.  The adjustment at the lever is for lever freeplay, at the bottom is for clutch tension adjustment.  If adjusting it does no good, then the clutchplates and springs should be replaced.

Good luck.
