Motorcycle Repair: Drag baffles, air fuel ratio, drag pipes

Question
Johnny, what kind of baffles would you recommend for the best sound in drag pipes? If not using baffles would you reccomend the use of cones for some backpressure? How about cones and baffles? Also are the 107 C.I. S&S engines put in customs such as Big Dog considered high performance and if so, would the same considerations such as backpressure and rejetting be an issue when going to straight exhaust? I did once use 4" mini baffles but they had a hissing, sort of muddled sound. Would an exhaust flange leak affect the sound in this way or is that characteristic of the small baffle? Thanks so much. you are one of a good few.

Answer
Hi Garry
I don't always give the answers people want to hear. But I tell the truth and go by years of testing on my Dynojet 250 load controller dyno with air/fuel ratio montor. It has never lied to me yet. First off No baffles will ever help Drag Pipes. I don't care who makes them. or how short or long there are. Using anti-reversion cones will not help at all and will only shift the proublem to a different RPM range. and make the bike run worst then it all ready is. The S&S 107 is not a hi-performance motor It is a Detuned motor. The cam realy sucks in the 107 and the heads have to be reworked and the shark that does not bike to be removed.and the Valve Geometery is wrong on all 4 valves, and so is the rocker arms and there geometery. You will never get your bike to run right on the street with Drag pipes. Drag pipes work at hi-RPMS and in a very small power band. You will loose lowend and midrange torque and horse power across the entire power band. So unless you ride your bike in each gear at 5,500 rpms every where you go then you wont have a problem. I just never met a rider who does this.Take care Friend. This is Facts no bull here!!
