Motorcycle Repair: Honda XR 80 Carburation., honda xr 80, air fuel mixture

Question
I have a 1980 XR 80, and I have recently rebuilt the head. I did not own this bike until just before doing the head, I have never ridden it. When at idle and I try to open the throttle wide open, quickly, it bogs. If I open it in rapid twists of the throttle, eventually wide open, it's ok. If I apply the choke, slightly, I can snap the throttle wide open slow or fast and it responds great.I have the air screw about 1-1/2 turns out from seated.I have also disassembled and cleaned the carb thoroughly, including jets and passages. The needle clip is in the 2nd groove from the top.It was in the 3rd groove and I moved it upto drop the needle, but no difference.I had the cam and crank in proper position when assembled and I have installed new points, gapped at .014, and they just start to open at the "F" mark on the rotor. Any help would be appreciated Thanks, Bill.

Answer
Hi Bill,

The air-fuel mixture is lean. Move the jet needle clip the other direction to richen the mid-range. Raising the needle richens, lowering leans.

If the problem persists, tuning another area of carburetion is needed.

Send me an email. I'll return several files on tuning carbs. My email addy is: mshively1@woh.rr.com
