Motorcycle Repair: starting/ ignition problem, tripped circuit breaker, bandit 600n

Question
ashleymr@tiscali.co.uk----hi there. i have a 1997 suzuki bandit 600N.this morning, went to start it and ended up draining the battery. that was no real problem as it had not been started for a while, and i have a power pack; which i took down to my garage to help start it.
went to connect up the power pack to the battery, and in my haste to get to work connected leads the wrong way round.immediately removed the second lead as it sparked.checked for the + and - sides of the battery to reconnect correctly.that was when i found out that the ignition lights were dead.they were ok before this.checked the fuses in the fuse box and they look intact. with thanks.--ashley...

Answer
Hi Ashley,

You'll have to look more closely for a tripped circuit breaker or burned fusable link (fuse).

There's a chance that the TCI/CDI, or other delicate electronics is damaged by the reversed polarity.

Begin by tracing main power circuit, and then the starting circuit. Check all related wiring and components within the circuit. Move throughout the harness until the problem part is found.

I know it's much work, but this is how it's done. Use a 12 VDC tester and trace power.
