Motorcycle Repair: 1972 Honda CL175 carburation problem, air screw, honda cl175

Question
This bike has not run for about 20 years. I cleaned it up, disassembled the carbs, cleaned them and put in new parts from a Keyster carb rebuild kit. I also cleaned the tank and the petcock screen.

The bike runs fair when the engine is cold. As it warms up it begins to run as if the fuel mixture is very rich. Almost like the choke is closed, but it isn't.

The air screw adjustment has almost no effect.

My thoughts are that the jets I got with the rebuild kit are wrong, or the float level is off in the carb.

Your thoughts on this are very welcome.

Thanks,

Ron

Answer
Ron... here are my thoughts...
1. You mixed the carburetor slides up... The cutaway goes to the air filter sides and there are L & R slides. Check them first.
2. Make sure that the float levels are set at 21mm and there are no pinholes in the floats causing them to not float.
3. Air screw adjustments are only for idle mixtures, so put them back to 1 1/4 turns, plus or minus a quarter turn.
4. Try the Honda jets instead of the KEYSTER kit parts. I have found them to be inaccurate in some models, giving rich mixtures at low/mid-range speeds.
5. Be sure that the spark timing is set correctly and that the mechanical spark advance is functioning properly.
