Motorcycle Repair: Electrical fault, honda cbr 600cc, electrical fault

Question
Hi Chris,
I have a 1996 honda cbr 600cc that has done approx 3500 dry miles, the problem i have is when i switch the ignition on everything seems fine,
until i touch any electrical switch which seems to
make everything go haywire,ie switch the indicators on and the speedo starts reading 40mph,
the engine is not turning over at all,i've had
the battery checked and it seems fine so i am at a loss, have you any ideas what i should now check?

Answer
Hi Phil.
What you have is a major electrical fault in the main wiring harness.  This will require the wiring diagram in the repair manual and a multimeter.

Check all of the wiring the ciruits for any bare wire sections or burned wire smell.  You may, quite likely, have to unwrap the wiring harnes (all or part) to find the short, but there is one there, which is arcing across most, or all, of the circuits.

Let me know how it goes.
Good luck.
