Motorcycle Repair: Front Fork Seal, damper rod, yamaha dealership

Question
Hi Chris I own a 82 yamaha xj650 maxim.  The fork seals are leaking.  I have removed the forks from the bike.  The problem is that the bolt on the bottom that holds the damper rod turns and turns but will not come out so I can remove the inner tube form the outer.  I have followed the instructions from a maint manuel for this bike.  Can you help.

Thanks Dennis

Answer
Hi Dennis.
Complete disassembly of the forks requires a special tool for removal of that last bolt.  If you have the factory repair manual, then the tool will be listed.  If you have a Clymer's or Haynes manual, then it may not be listed there.

Check at the local Yamaha dealership for the tool.  They can order it for you.

Good luck.
