Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Honda CB750K Charging System Problem, 1981 honda cb750k, voltage rectifier

Question
I'm having a problem with my 1981 Honda CB750K.  I can't get the charging system to charge at a high enough rate to keep the battery fully charged.  I have changed the stator, voltage rectifier, brushes and 2 other things that I have no idea what the name is but the mechanic that is currently working on the bike told be I needed to replace because they showed signs of being burnt.  He says that he can only get it to charge at a rate lower than 11 volts and I guess it's supposed to be up around 14.5 or better...Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...Thanks  Steve Pope

Answer
Stephan, it sounds like the mechanic is using the shotgun method of troubleshooting the charging system.

www.electrexusa.com for a LOT of info....

The systems DO have a pair of small carbon brushes that wear out and are easily inspected and changed. However, the majority of these kinds of problems with the DOHC Honda fours, from that era, are often in the rotor itself. Have the mechanic check the resistance on the slip rings, COLD and HOT. These rotors often go open after the engine heats them up or change the resistance value to the point where it throws the whole system for a loop.
