Motorcycle Repair: BMW R65LS 82, bmw r65ls, haynes manual

Question
Falcon,
Thanx for the speedy response...

Can the carbs go out of sync 3 months after being set by themselves (noone has touched the carbs)?

I just did the valves last weekend, even had experienced help.

How do I check the ignition coil?

Thanx again,
dave o

Hi Chris,
I've got a BMW R65LS '82 with a problem. When I roll on the throttle to come to speed, the engine bogs.
It bogs down at a certain RPM (Don't have a tach) consistantly. It's getting fuel & spark. When I take  1 sparkplug cap off (right side) it backfires. When I do that to the other side, it doesn't.

It's happened before, but the dealership that I took it to told me a bunch of BS, Fixed the problem, but it came back in a month. I can't go back to them because they are 2hr away, & I don't have a way to get it there. So I'm Kinda stuck.

I thought it might be my timing is off... but haven't messed with it yet. yes, i do have the haynes manual.

thanx

Hi Dave.
 There are a few possibilities, here.  They are;

1)  Valve timing and gap.

2)  Carb Synch.

3)  Ignition coil.

4)  Connections or wiring shorts
in the ignition system for the affected cylinder.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck.

Answer
Hi Dave.
It is extremely unlikely that the carbs would have gone out of synch on their own in 3 months, unless you put a decent amount of miles (over 2000) during that time.

To check the ignition coils, you need the repair manual (for the specs and test proceedures) and a multimeter.

I believe that you could have a problem in the coil(s) or wiring to the affected coil.

Good luck.
