I have a Suzuki Savage LS650.  Generally the bike runs fine.  When I shut down with the kill switch, I get a single loud backfire just as the engine stops turning over.  I do not think the bike had been ridden very much in the 6 months before I bought it.  Any ideas on how I can get rid of this pop?  Thanks.

Hi Glenn,

What happens when you shut down with only the key?

The same single backfire happens when I shut down with only the key.  Also, when I ride downhill at highway speeds and roll off of the throttle (high RPM & closed throttle), I get an intermittent backfire.  Thanks.

Glen,

What year is the LS? I'll research the backfiring problem.

The year is 2002.  If it matters it has about 2700 miles.

Answer
Glenn,

Go to the below listed website link and examine part #34. This is the air cut-off diaphragm. This is designed into carbs to prevent deacceleration backfiring. Other causes may be varnishing of the fuel left in the float bowl during periods of non-starting and storage. Inspect the diaphragm for defects and clean the carburetor as necessary.

If you want my carb files, email me.
