Motorcycle Repair: honda goldwing aspencade 1985, honda goldwing aspencade, turn signal switch

Question
I need help!  We are to ride (if we can fix) our bike to a family reunion.  We replaced a flasher under the seat to see if we could get our turning signals to come on.  That did not help, we do have emergency flashers, brake lights, but no turning signals.  When you turn them on the lights go out, its like the wiring doesn't recognize the command weve given.  Do you think you can help us?  My husband is a mechanic/welder at his company and knows lots about mechanics but this has him stumped.  Please help, and thank you.

God Bless, Michelle Munselle

Answer
Michelle, I am not an expert in the area of GW Aspencades, but there are numerous sites dedicated to them.

I don't know if this bike has an electronic control for the turn signals or just a regular flasher.

Basically, you have power going into the flasher from the ignition switch, sometimes through fuses. The flasher is hot all the time that the ignition is on, so the power path goes from the flasher to the turn signal switch, which then distributes the voltage to either left or right sides of the bike. IF your bike has had accys attached to it that are not OEM Honda, then you may have a short or open circuit there.

The front lights are double filament so one set is for running lights and the other is for the turn signals.

The power through the switch goes out to front and rear signals light filaments, then must go to ground to complete the circuit. Open grounds, open wires or connectors, bad t/s switch or no power in/out of the flasher will all cause failures of the signal system.
