Motorcycle Repair: Valve cover gasket repair, bolt torque chart, valve cover gasket

Question
I know that you are good with honda's but I'm hoping you can help me . I have a 1983 Suzuki GS750T and from what I have been told it is a rare bike well I believe that because I can not find any specs on this model All I need is the Torque specs for the valve cover it is leeking bad and I did get the gasket kit but know one seems to be able to tell me where I can find out How tight to make the bolts so that I dont create another leak. If you could help me I would be forever grateful.

Answer
Garry, I don't have the specs for that machine.

Try: http://www.thegsresources.com/ for assistance or check your local m/c supply shop or dealer for a copy of a service repair manual. Not only will you get the proper torque values, but you will also find out the recommended tightening pattern for the cam cover bolts.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/TechReference/Bolts/Bolt_Torque_Info.ht...    there is a metric bolt torque chart at the end of the page...

From one site:
6mm Allen bolt torque = 1.0kgm (8 ft.lbs.) but doesn't specify the grade of the bolts involved. Be sure you know the grade/hardness of the bolts before you finish the torque sequence.

http://www.fullermetric.com/Dimensional_Information/Torque_Figures.htm  has another chart with conversions, based on the tensile strength of the bolts involved, as well as the size and thread pitch.

Many mechanics have a "feel" for bolts and can tighten them correctly w/o a torque wrench. I suggest that you test all bolt threads first before you install the parts so you don't have a surprise thread failure when you are tighening down the fasteners.
