Hi Chris:
I'm in the process of buying a 93 Yamaha TW-200 privately.  The engine has a ticking or tapping noise.  Current owner said he tried adjusting valves but it didn't help.  I'm not sure if he even knows how to adjust valves.  I told him I'll take the bike "as is" and I'll fix it.  If he's right and it's not a valve adjustment, any ideas what it could be?  The bike has been sitting for years un-used and has 3,800 miles on it.  It runs great except for the tapping noise.
Thanks!
Bill

Hi Bill.
It depends on where the ticking is coming from and if it picks up when then the rpm's do.

If it's coming from the upper head and increases with the rpm's then it is the valves and either he needed shims that he didn't have or he adjusted the valves with the engine not completely cold.

Let me know what you find and we can proceed from there.
Good luck.

Thanks Falcon!
Hopefully today I'll take posession of the bike and then I'll be able to check it out myself.  I didn't realize this engine used shims for valve adjustment, I thougtht it was a conventional threaded stem with a jam nut. First thing I need to do is get a repair manual so I can bone up on this particular bike.  Do you know off hand what the valve clearances are supposed to be set at?
Thanks,
Bill

Answer
Hi Bill.
Some engines use shims while some use threaded adjustments.  I am not sure which one the engine in question uses, so I am just covering all the bases and getting you prepared for the potential for headaches so that you wouldn't get too many suprises.

Before you do any adjustments or engine work on the bike, make sure that you have the repair manual.  It will be a huge help with the specs and diagrams for the entire bike.

Good luck on it.
