RV Repair: RV Cover vs. Tarp, micro climates, tornado force

Question
Dear Thom,

We have a 1992 Shadow Cruiser 5th wheel that we would like to get another year or so out of.  We have always kept it covered with a Tyvek RV cover (this was cover #4). Tornado force winds last nite ripped the 4 year old cover to shreds. Since we only intend to keep this 5W another year or so, can we get by with just tying a generic tarp over the roof?  I hate to invest another $300+ for just one more years service.  I have heard that a regular tarp can trap moisture under it and do more harm that good, but on the other hand, a 14 year old rubber roof sure could use protection while in storage.  Thanks so much for your opinion!

Also, we are considering a newer (2001-2004)diesel truck (F-250, Ram 2500, etc) to tow a new fiver. I am finding some older trucks with lower mileage (ex. 01 Ram 62K miles)and some newer trucks with high mileage (ex. 05 F250 99K miles).  Do you think its better to go with an older truck with lower mileage, or newer but higher mileage? Again, I really appreciate your input!

Regards,
Bob

Answer
Hi Bob
I believe tarps cause more trouble then they are worth.
They produce "micro climates" that are not good for your coach. There not lined and don't keep water out as much as they seem to keep it in.
If you use a tarp, you'll have to "manage it " to get the best from it.
I suggest you bite the (new cover) bullet and pass the cost along to the new buyer. Add it to the sale price as a bonus if the buyer meets your price.  Theres nothing like a used trailer thats been well loved to hold resale.
I like a "well loved truck" as well. Good records ,tender care, nice ad-ons, tell a lot about the love of the owner for their truck.
If that 01 Dodge has the pulling power you want and your wife likes the color and her side of the truck, then I'd go with 62k Dodge.
But I think the 05 Ford has more pulling power
Both of those trucks have proved themselves.
