Motorcycle Repair: bike stalls on itself, kawasaki ninja zx6r, water in the fuel

Question
I was riding my 1996 kawasaki ninja zx6r in the highway and when i am about to exit i press the clutch and let it roll so it can slow down. When I hold it the clutch the rpm drop to about 800rpm but then it just drop to 0rpm and the bike just stalls.  It happen a few times, One time I stop on a red light holding the clutch in first gear, then the bike suddenly stalls.  Can you help me figure out what is the problem please. Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Ken.
With no other symptoms to go on, I would say that you have either a short/bad connection/bad fuse in the ignition system or water in the fuel.

If the bike starts up after a few tries, then it could be water in the fuel.

If the bike starts back up right away, then it could be a bad fuse connection or intermittent short.

There is also the possibility of the ignition coils going bad, but that is the last thing you should check for.

You will need a multimeter and the repair manual to check the wiring as well as the coils.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
