Motorcycle Repair: 1977 Honda CB750 will not start,, 1977 honda cb750, starter solenoid

Question
Chris,  My problem is with my 1977 CB750, the starter used to work, until last month.  At first I thought it was a weak battery; but I charge the battery even replace it and still the starter will not engage/turn the motor over.  I even replace the starter but still no crank.  The starter seems to be working, the replacement was tested at the parts dept. and the battery is new but it seems that the starter is not engaging the reduction gears?

Answer
Hi Rudy.
If the starter motor is not turning at all, then start with the fuses.  Check them for connection and function.

Does the motor turn with the kickstarter?  If not then your Engine may be the problem.

Then check the starter circuit wires for shorts, bad connections and arcing.

Then check the starter solenoid.  It should click when you hit the starter button.  You can test it by jumping the leads on it.  If the motor turns, then the problem is the solenoid.

Start with that and let me know what you find.

Good luck.
