Motorcycle Repair: honda 350 SL, honda 350, head gasket

Question
I am missing one of the locating dowels that go between the cylinders and the head. My manual says there should be four dowels and that o-rings need to be on them. Is that correct? I would think that would interfere with the fit of the head gasket?

thanks  george

Answer
George... there are generally 4 dowls used to locate the cylinder head correctly on the cylinder block. The forward ones are sealed with O-rings, due to their job as oil transfer galleys. They may be of different lengths. The forward ones should have large holes in the headgaskets to accomodate the O-rings.
