i have a 83 shovelhead stock, crane HI-4 single fire ignition S&S B carb cycleshack exaust. the bike is very dependable. the other day i went out for a ride got about 3 miles from the house crusing about 35 to 40 mph. in 3rd. gear. the bike was running fine then all of a sudden it started poping very loud out the exaust. the bike lost power kept running but no power. pulled over and it stalled. turned over fine but woudn't start. waited a few minutes it started drove home it ran fine. got home checked all electrical cannections everything tight checked plugs and plug wires found nothing wrong. drained float bowl cleaned, put new fuel line and filter, cleaned filter element. started bike, ran fine, took it for test ride, after about 3 miles it did it again. any idea what it could be. thanks in advance Rick D.

Pull your plugs and see what color they are. If they are fouled, do a test on the coil and plug wires. If you need to know how let me know. You will need a OHM meter to do the test.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike.- Thanks for your quick response. follow up question. i have an OHM meter. how do i go about checking the coil. thanks. Rick

Forgot to ask, since you have a single fire ignition, do you have two coils or one?
Mike          It's one coil. Crane hi intencidy coil, to match the Crane single fire ignition. I believe it's really two separate coils molded as one. Rick

Answer
You are correct. It is two coils in one.
Remove the coil. Put one probe on the hot post and the other probe on one of the other posts. Youshould be getting around 2.5 to 3 OHMs. Now do the same for the other side. You should get the same. If not then the coil is bad.
