Motorcycle Repair: bike runs good, but..., honda cb350, plug caps

Question
so, yeah. thanks to your advice my bike ('73 honda cb350) is now running good and i trust it on decent length trips, but there's still a few small things going on. one is: a lot of the time (not all times, and not even most times, but frequently) when i first start the bike it only runs on one cylender, but it doesn't take long for the offender to kick in (20sec-1min), and rarely a cylender will die while i'm riding, so i'll pull off the road, stop the bike and start again in a few minutes and it will be fine. the other thing that's bugging me, though i don't know whether it's a problem or not, is that i only get about 30-35 mpg. is that expected with a bike that old, or is there something going on there?
thanks again for your help.
Nick

Answer
Nick, am glad to hear that you are making headway with the bike.
I would check the spark plug caps for matching resistance, carefully check the carb synchronization (throttle cable adjustments) to see if that clears up the cold running issue. It is not all that uncommon with these old bikes, but you should be able to tune it out, if everything else is matched.

Fuel mileage should be higher than 30s. I can't quite recall the details, but in some carbs of this series you can reverse the primary and secondary main jets, which cause rich running a mid-range speeds. If they are different physical size then this would not be the case.

Otherwise, be sure that your spark advancer is function properly. They are often a problem with the older twins.
