Motorcycle Repair: I own a 1995 Moto Guzzi California..., moto guzzi california, backyard mechanic

Question
I own a 1995 Moto Guzzi California 1100 w/Dellorto PHF 36 carbs.  Since a backyard mechanic messed with the valve lash the bike does not have "snap" when I throttle up and is hard to start sometimes and runs terrible.  The carbs were balanced using a vacumm guage.  Can my problem be with the carbs and valves? My book says the lash should be: intake 0.10mm and the exhaust 0.15mm (the USA version: intake 0.05mm and exhaust 0.10mm) What would be the correct setting.  Thank you very much, Harold.

Answer
Hi Harold.
 Do you have the foreign market model or the American market model?

If you have the foreign market model then the gaps will be as indicated initially in the book.

If you have the American market model, then it will be as indicated in parenthesies for the USA version.  If the guy who set them the last time, set them as per the wrong one, then no wonder you are having problems.

If you don't know which model you have, then here's the rule of thumb;
 If you bought it overseas from an overseas dealer for the overseas market, then you have a foreign market bike.

 If you bought it here in the states and the original seller (if you bought the bike 2nd hand) was a U.S. dealership, then you have an American market bike.

Good luck.
