I have a 1983 yamaha venture that's starts and runs on 2 cylinders.I was told the coils was bad and not all were firing.Is that true?

Hi Joe.
 It is very likely that one of the coils is bad.

 On 4 cylinder engines, the coils are set up so that each coil operates 2 cylinders.

 There could be other reasons that 2 cylinders are not firing, but that would depend on which 2 cylinders are out.

 There is the possibility that the coil operating the affected cylinders has a short in the wiring between the coil and power.  That, too, would cause the coils to not fire up.

Start by checking the wiring to the coil for the affected cylinders and if that is okay, then check the coil in accordance with the specs in the repair manual.
