Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha ATV engine, yamaha kodiak atv, work horse

Question
We have a Yamaha Kodiak ATV.  (1994)  This unit has about 16000 miles on it.  It is a atv that is used for work around the farm.  It has started to carbon up the spark plug more often than it use to. After the plug is cleaned it will run fairly good. Running the engine at mid to high rpms it seems to surge as you run down the road.  Has become harder to start.  Also started to use some oil.  Tried to check compression but my compression tester will not fit to take the test.  We have checked  the air filter. The molded pipe from the carb. to the intake appears to be alright.  Has been a very good work machine.  Any ideas on how to keep the plug from carboning up and the surging of the engine would be appreciated.

Thanks

The Kodiak is a great work horse.
