Motorcycle Repair: Clutch Free Play, honda aspencade, brake bleeders

Question
Bill,

I have a 1984 GL1200 Honda Aspencade. Last night I noticed that I started to get a lot of free play in my clutch handle. Eventually I could not get into gear and had a tuff time getting it home. I checked the clutch mastercylinder this morning and it was below the fill line. I filled it up and still had nothing. I than bled the line out. I noticed when bleeding the line the fluid did not squirt out when I released the clutch handle but seemed to drip out as if it was the gravity only. I still have no pressure on the clutch handle after bleeding. Any ideas? I am thinking it might be the Master Cylinder but not sure. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Matt, either the hose has collapsed internally or the bleed holes in the base of the m/c reservior are blocked with crud. The bleed holes are tiny, but necessary.

You mention that the fluid level dropped and it can only do that at the m/c or the slave cylinder down at the engine cases. I think you would notice at the m/c, so if the line is okay, then the slave cylinder may be leaking past the seal.

FYI
Vacuum brake bleeders from the auto parts stores are the cat's pajamas for bleeding bike fluid systems.....

Of course if the bike has 1,000,000 miles and is still on the original m/c then it may just be time for an overhaul kit or replacement.
