Motorcycle Repair: 1999 Yamaha yzf R1, hi tommy, tach

HI Falcon,

 I am looking at buying a 1999 R1.  The only problem with the bike is after you start it up the tac on the bike jumps up real high (12k rpm)for half a second and then drops back down to idle.  It is only the tach that does this, the engine remains the same.  Any ideas?  Thanks for your help.

Hi Tommy.
 This sounds like a small short in the wiring or possibly somewhere that the tach is grounding out.

 Since the tach on that bike is electrical and not mechanical, these kinds of problems occur sometimes.  It is nothing major, but if it bother's you, then chase down the wiring for the tach and see if there is anywhere that the wiring is arcing to any other components or grounding somewhere that it shouldn't.
