Motorcycle Repair: Virago idles too fast, adjustment screw, virago 535

Question
Hi Chris,

Another question.  I got my 1996 Virago 535 runnning again after sitting for a year.  It wouldn't start at all so I cleaned the carbs (but made no adjustments).  It runs well hot or cold with one exception.  When the engine gets hot, it idles very fast.  For example, if I stop at a light, the engine will continue to run very fast.  I can force it to slow down by putting it in gear and riding the brake.  The throttle adjustment screw is all the way out and I know the butterfly completely closes.  It seems like maybe I missed something during my carb cleaning.  I didn't clean the coasting enrichment mechanism because I coudn't get to it easily.  Could that be where my problem lies?
Thanks, Rick

Answer
Hi Rick.
That mechanism may well be the problem.  If the carbs are not properly and completely cleaned, then some of the varnish is still going to be there and cause the components to stick.  The entire carb mechanism must be free of this contaminant before it will runn correctly or be able to be tuned correctly.

Good luck.
