Motorcycle Repair: Revs out in idle, choke brings it down, liquid plumber, air jets

Question
Hi Mark, You gave me some excellent advice on a previous question, thanks.  I'm back for some more.

I bought a 1982 Honda 450t hawk 2 cylinder bike that has what I guess are carb issues.  In gear it runs fine, but at idle it begins to rev out up to 5000 andd more RPM's.  I pull out the choke and that brings it down, It will kill it if I don't let it back out at the last minute.

My guess is that there is an air bypass jet that is clogegd in the pilot system, although I'm not sure.  I was looking for some advice and hoping that there would be some way to fix this without overhauling the carbs, maybe a fuel additive?

Possibly related, possible not is that in high gear it tops out around 50, lacking power and burns oil.  I just changed the oil, and put in a thickener so it doesn't burn any more, but have not yet tested if there's more power at speed.  Could this be part of the carb issue?
Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Answer
Hey Dan!

Well, the "Liquid Plumber" of carb cleaners would have to be Sea Foam. Check the product label intel at your local car parts store. I suspect air jets would not be cleaned by fuel additives. Need an air cleaner. lol

The only way to clean carbs is by removal and thoroughly cleansing. Do you have my files on carburetors and cylinder testing? If not, send an email address as requested.

The loss of power may be related to the carbs, but to learn the condition of the engine and combustion chamber sealing properties, perform cylinder compression and leak-down tests.
