Motorcycle Repair: hotwire the ignition?, hot wire, coils

Question
CHRIS,
I HAVE A P.O.S.1974?YAMAH 100 MOTRCYCLE. IVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THIS BIKE RUNNING FOR SOME TIME.THE IGNITION IS FRIED! COULD YOU HOT WIRE THE IGNITION? AND IF SO, HOW.

Answer
Hi Ken.
What on the ignition is fried?  The switch, coils, what?
The ignition is a series of components consisting of power, wiring (of course), ignition coil(s), pickup coils (condensor coils on older bikes), and the ignition switch.  Any one of those failing could cause the bike to not run or run poorly.  The ignition switch could be repaired, but it would be simpler to just replace it for 20 or 30 bucks, if that is the problem.

If you are talking about hot-wireing the ignition coil, then forget it.  It is not possible.  Nor is it possible to hot-wire the condensor coil.

Good luck.

If you are not sure of what part of the ignition system is fried, then get the repair manual out and test each of the components to determine which one is faulty.
