Motorcycle Repair: bike not starting, starter solenoid, battery fluid

Question
Yo falcon, i appreciate the advice:
My 1982 Yamaha Maxim (750)is not starting. I bought it 3 weeks ago and have ridden it plenty since, it starting easily each time. Today I took it down (going maybe 15 mph) and hit a curb, it hit the ground... I next rode it to the gas station, turning it on and off, then a 30 min ride home. Then, 6 hrs later, I was going to take it for a ride, and it wont turn over. Nothing, no sound, anything when I hit the engine start button, any advice? is it possible that this is related to me taking a small spill earlier on it? what should i do? any quick fixes so i can drive it to a mechanic?
thanks.
ps. to the best of my knowledge, the battery is pretty new and it is up to date on oil changes and such...

Answer
Hi Laura.
Start by checking the fuses and fuse connections.  If all are well, then check the connections to the battery, starter solenoid and check the battery fluid levels, as well as charge and condition with both a multimeter and a hygrometer.  You should also get (if you haven't already) a repair manual for the bike.

It is possible that something got loosened up or damaged due to the spill and finally gave out after you got home.

If the battery is fairly new, then you should be able to tell, since most shops engrave the initial install date on the top of the battery.  That date should not be any more than two years old.  If it is beyond that, then you likely need a new one.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
