Motorcycle Repair: 1970 triumph 650 tr6r electrical problems, boyer electronic ignition, triumph 650

Question
hi there, first of all let me thank you for providing such an awesome site. iam fairly new to motorcycles and with the shortage of honest mechanics in new york city its hard to get any good work done. you guys are a big help
first of all i've owned this pretty stock pre-oil in frame triumph for two years and the electrics have been pretty close to perfect. i ran lights all day long and only had to give the battery a refresher charge every 3-4 months or so.
but of course running great with the points system wasn't good enough so i had to fix something that wasnt broken.
i opted to install a boyer electronic ignition as well as replace the standard zener and rectifier with a typaninium unit.
i explained to the mechanic that boyer recommends using two 6 volt coils as opposed to the two 12 volt ones standard on my bike. i also explained that since i was installing the boyer maybe he should go ahead and isntall a new sparx 210 volt 3 phase alternator but he said this was bullshit and that my stock alternator should keep the boyer happy.
487.00 dollars later my bike rides fine home from the shop but then as i ride throughout the day and stop at the many traffic lights in new york city the bike slowly stalls out. sometimes it idles fine until i give it gas, then it stalls out immediately. the next morning i take the battery out to give it a slow 2 amp charge to make sure everything is ok.
i put the battery back in and lights are extremely bright. start up the bike and go for a run.
everything is good up to this point but as i start to sit at too many traffic lights the bike slowly stalls out on me.
i then start the bike up again and run without the headlights and just the taillight and it runs a little better ,just takes longer to stall out at traffic light.
i then start the bike again and shut off headlights and taillight and the bike runs even better but just eventually stallls out if its sitting for too long  at the traffic light.
please help, my mechanic blames the boyer, someone else says its the typanium(rectifier/zener unit in one) but mind you this unit is brand new and installed with the boyer.
thanks for all your time and any help will be greatly appreciated
p.s. should i just buy a new sparx hi output 210  volt 3 phase alternator and hope that i can install it myself without dealing with the timing or anything else. ia m a novice mechanic at best

Answer
Hi Quy,

You're probably more experienced with your Triumph than I, and my family is from the UK. lol

Basically, I would start with a altenator output test and compare VOM readings to factory specs.

Next, test circuit components and verify they're in good working condition.

If you can afford to live in NYC, you can afford the higher output Sparx Alti. Just kidding again, but I agree with you on the altenator upgrade. Ensure the regulator & rectifier are ok prior to installing anything new.

Try visiting: "www.motorcycle-usa.com/forum" a good tech resource. Requires free membership (no spam).

Please leep me posted on your progress. I'm not Triumph savy, but willing to learn.

Peace be with you.
