Motorcycle Repair: timing an evo with points ignition, electronic ignition system, point gap

Question
How do I set the timing on  my 1987 softail. It has been converted to points. I need step by step instructions please. I cannot find anything out on the net and my workshop manual only covers electronic ignitions.

Answer
First of all you went TOTALY BACKWARDS going to points.  But its you bike.      Remove plugs and put bike in 5th gear rotate engine over untill big lobe on ignition cam holds the points open. loosen point hold down screw and adjust point gap .016" to .018" gap  now tighten screws and now rotate engine over again untill narrow cam lobe is holding points open and check gap.    it should be with in .002" of the big lobe gap,    make sure you turn the motor over with the rear tire in the direction that the bike rolls forward in.   if you really want to get the bike up to par. trash the 1903 point system and install a COMPU-FIRE electronic ignition system and you will never have to jack with this crap again    JOHNNY
