Motorcycle Repair: 81 Honda CM400A Idels out and then floods, worst case scenario, stop screw

Question
Hi, Chris
I have a 1981 honda cm400a it was stored for 2 years untill
this year i replaced the tires, chain, spark plugs and broken
throttle cabels. Then noticed the carberator was gumed up
(because it would not start) so i took the carberator out and
cleaned as mutch as i could without totaly disasembuling the
whole thing (i took off the top coverand vacuum piston, the float
bowl and the accelerator pump rod assembly and cleaned with a
carb cleaner). I did replace the accelerator pump rod assembly
because the exsiting diaphram was brittel. So i put it all back
together and now it starts (huray!) but it doesent hold a idle. I
tryed to adjust the throttle stop screw and the pilot screw but it
still does not hold a idle and quits. then it flods and takes a long
time to start again. when i do have it running and put it in first
gear it is vary slow accelerating and then when i slow down it
quits.

what do you think is the problem?
any ideas of what i can do?
Im not a macanic but im good at tinkering around, So do you
think i should bring it to a repair shop?

thank you vary mutch for entertaining my questions

Answer
Hi Trevor.
You need a complete and proper cleaning and rebuild of the carb.  This means having the repair manual to reference and replacing all of the rubber and seals in the carb.

The bike is 23 years old and I'll bet that everything in the carbs is original and spent more than just the 2 years in storage.  I am sure that it spent some time in seasonal storage for, at least, most of it's life's years.

The worst case scenario would mean a new carb, but you may not need that if the cleaning and rebuild is done right.

Since the complete cleaning means the mixture screw needs to be removed and reset, then you may want a shop to do the job.

Good luck.
