Motorcycle Repair: spark plugs arent firing, yamaha fzr 600, 1996 yamaha fzr 600

Question
Thanks for gettin back to me so quick.  all the fuses are good.  i took the cdi box out just now.  there was never any signs of anything getting fried.  i didn't notice that anything got particularly wet either.  could the cdi just go bad?  ignition fuse is fine.  everything seems to be fine dang it!  that's the worst part.  how would i check for a short in the ignition circuit?  any other suggestions?  thanks

what's up falcon!?

i hope you can help me.  my 1996 yamaha fzr 600 got left out in a surprise rain storm about a week ago.  after the storm it would not start.  i thought it might be water in the tank or in the carbs, a wet filter, something like that.  all fuses are good.  i tried starting it with the choke on all the way - no good.  i took the spark plugs out, grounded one to the engine block and cranked it, but there was no spark at all.  tried with all the others and no spark. the plugs are new and even bad plugs should spark a little.  i'm not familiar with electronic igniters at all.  any idea what's wrong?  thanks!
*i have never had any other problems with the bike

Hi Seth.
Did you check the fuses and fuse connections?  The ignition fuse could have decided to go bad on you or you could have a short in the ignition circuit.

Did the CDI box get wet?  If it did and got wet enough, then it could have gone bad from water damage when you tried to start it up.  Did you smell anything like burning when you tried to start the bike after the storm?  That would indicate fried components.

Check those out and let me know what you find.
Good luck.

Answer
Hi Seth.
In order to check for shorts in the ignition system you will need the repair manual (which has the wiring diagram) and a multimeter.  Check from power to ignition coils.  Also check for bad/dirty connections in the ignition circuit.

As far as the CDI going bad, it is extremely uncommon.  If the box smells like burning wiring, then it is fried.  There will be no mistaking a burned up box.

There's not a whole lot else that it could reasonably be.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
