Motorcycle Repair: Starting problem, kawasaki ltd454, starter solenoid

Question
1989 Kawasaki LTD454 will not start.  Brand new battery, all lights, etc. work.  The bike will not start, push the starter switch and it doesn't even so much as click or try to turn the engine over.

Answer
Hi Donna,

Check fuses.

Check battery voltage. New battery, but this is where you start. You want 12 volts or more.

With key in the "on" position, check for battery voltage at starter button using a 12 VDC tester. Look for burned or corroded button contacts, spider webs, etc.. things that would prevent contacts from making contact.

Disconnect and remove starter solenoid. Apply 12 VDC to primary lead on starter solenoid, ground casing. Solenoid should click loudly.

Try these and we'll go from there. Reply to my email: mshively1@woh.rr.com
