Motorcycle Repair: tire change and brake replacement, unbalanced tire, honda 400

Question
Dear Chris,

I own a 1980 Honda 400 CMT. I am going to try and replace the rear brakes and the rear tire. I believe I know how to do everything except seating the bead on the rear tire. Can you tell me How I can do it myself or if I have to take it to a garage.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

Sincerely,

   Mike

Answer
Hi Mike.
Seating the tire bead is easy as long as you have access to a good air comppressor.

You need to over inflate the tire till the bead (quite literally) pops into place.  You will both see the bead set and hear an audible pop as the bead seats.

Also do not forget about balancing the wheel after the tire has been changed.  An unbalanced tire can get you killed.

Good luck.
