Motorcycle Repair: Shifter Linkage Problem, heritage springer, linkage problem

Question
SJ, I have a 2002 Heritage Springer with aproximately 10,500 miles on it. Recently the heel-too shifter has not been responding as it should. As an example: I shift to second no problem but when I go to third it's as if the shifter did not return to a neutral position. I have to jiggle it in order to kick it into gear. No "ratcheting" or other noises are heard. Could it just need lubrication. I had the 10,000 mile service done earlier this year.

Answer
IF THE SHIFTER LEVER IS PUSHED TOO CLOSE TO THE INSPECTION COVER WITH NO GAP BETWEEN THE LEVER AND THE SHIFT ARM. WHEN THE OUTER PRIMARY GETS HOT IT EXPANDS AND WILL KEEP THE SHIFTER LEVER FROM RETURNING, THERE SHOULD BE A .050" GAP BETWEEN THE SHIFTING LEVER AND THE INSPECTION COVER IN THE CENTER OF THE OUTER PRIMARY.  JOHNNY
