Motorcycle Repair: Brakes, auto parts store, roters

Question
My front brakes on my 1986 Yamaha squeek. Someone said they need to be cleaned. What is it you need to clean? I wiped off the roters but it didn't help.

Thanks
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe.
Brakes generally squeek, not because they are dirty (if you wash the bike well, that generally cleans away anything like that), but because the pads have crystalized.  It is normally nothing to worry about except for the noise.

If the noise bothers you enough, then there are 2 alternatives.  You can get some "stop squeek" at any auto parts store, or you can replace the pads.

Now I have heard conflicting reports on the effectiveness of Stop Squeek, so that one is your choice to try, but it will be cheaper than replacing the pads.

Good luck.
