Motorcycle Repair: timing, honda cb360, point gap

Question
willyusa66@aol.com

I reciently was given a 1976 honda cb360 motorcycle. I know nothing about motorcycles but I have a degree in electronics. The engine cranked ok but would not start.  Using my Oscope I was able to see that the points were not breaking so I cleaned them and now the bike starts. Runs well but some backfiring. Could it be the timing? How do I set and or check the ignition timing?

Answer
Hi Bill,

You're on the right path. I suspect ignition timing and point gaps need finely tuned. An osciliscope is dandy in the garage. : )

Set point gap and then set timing. The exact procedure and specs are in the service manual. Sorry, I don't have it or I would type the intel for you. Typically, point gaps are set between .012" and .016" set ignition timing to the "F" mark and verify timing advance by viewing the "double lines" next to the "F" mark when rpms are higher than idle.

You may find specs or exact procedures by searching on line for CB360/350 websites. It's been too long ago to recall exact details from memory.
