Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki GS500E, suzuki gs500e, stator coil

Question
I have put the new battery in my suzuki and it worked fine. After a week I could not start my bike. It works when I jump-start it from Car.

I have driven it about an hour or so but when I start it using battery it would click (kit kit kit...) but would not catch the engine. If I give a jump using car battery it works like a charm. What can be wrong and with my little mechanical mind can I repair/Replace the parts?

Thanks for your help.

VIk.

Answer
Hi Vik.
Start by checking the connections in the starter system, then check the starter circuit wiring for shorts.  If there is no problem there, then check the starter motor for burned out/dirty/worn brushes and contacts.  The repair manual should have an exploded view of the starter motor and schematic for the starter circuit.

If there is nothing wrong there, then you may want to check the stator coil for proper charging.  Start the bike and test the voltage across the battery terminals.  You should get 13 - 15 VDC.  If you get less than that, the coil is bad and needs to be replaced.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
